What are LUT?

A LUT stands for 'Look Up Table' and a look up table is kind of a formula or a set of values where you will a video footage and you will apply that formula or the LUT and you will get your final edited footage at the end and your LUT is just a way to color grade or add a cinematic or moody color tone to your videos so LUTs are commonly used now a days as color grading video presets but it was started out as a method to match video footage from one camera to another camera footage.
For an example: Lets say i have used 2 different camera's for a video shoot. First shot was taken from Panasonic GH5 Mark 2 and second or final shot was take from Sony A7S 3 as both the camera has different camera profiles so, in this case i will use Sony A7S 3 videos and will use a LUT to (Panasonic GH5 Mark 2) to match the color tones with Sony A7S 3 so that when i edit them both together they will look kind of the same and I could apply the same color grading at the end and then come with stunning looking video and final video will not look different that we have to different camera's for the video.

Right Now LUTs are being used as video color grading presets which is really cool. You just have to take a LUT and you can save color grading presets in video editing software's as a LUT and you can apply them wherever and whenever you want to all your videos. Lets say you want to use them on content for Instagram and want create a common theme or aesthetic for your photos and videos so in this LUT is a great way to do that. But one downside of using video color grading LUT as it doesn't save details like sharpening, vignette, noise removal, gradient filters etc, LUT is mainly for video color grading. So, if you want to edit sharpening, vignette, noise removal and gradient filters stuffs then you have to do that after applying LUT to your video. From LUTs you can improve your video color grading skills.

LUTs can be used in video editing software's like:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • VN Editor
  • CapCut (Mobile & Desktop)
  • Adobe After effects
  • Davinci Resolve
  • Final Cut Pro X
  • Sony Vegas
  • Avid
  • Filmora

How do Video Color Grading LUT Works?

A lookup table (LUT) is a set of RBG color values that takes a set of inputs and transforms them into a set of outputs. Much like a curve or a tone curve, it takes the data that is already in your footage and transforms it into something completely different representation and results are just amazing. A LUT can make all sorts of transformations, but the three primary ones we typically think of are hue, changing one color to another color, saturation, increasing the intensity of a color, and browning.

(.Cube) is one of most used format of Video Color Grading LUT. Cube format of LUT can be used on mobile and laptop both. Just you have to import your LUTs to your video editing software or Video editing app and then in just one click you can apply your LUT to your videos to make them stand out and save you lot of your time.
